How to KNOW when to say NO

One question I get often is “how do you know when to say no to things?”

#

Well to answer that question, you first have to get clear on your values and priorities.

#

For example, mine is 1. Faith, 2. Myself 3. Husband, 4. Family, 5. Work

#

Now that doesn’t mean I spend the majority of my time on faith, then me, then my husband, etc….it means that when shit hits the fan and all 5 of them need my attention, I prioritize in that order.

#

For example… the second my husband calls and asks me to take him to lunch for something important, that’s a priority over work at the time. If I need to take some time to go for a hike and process the stress going on in my life, then I do that before anything else requires my attention.  Make sense?

#

So if you have 5 things fighting for your time, prioritize in the way that you value and then whatever doesn’t have room for that day doesn’t get your attention.

#

You might be thinking, well if I did that everyday, then there’d be things at work I wouldn’t be able to get done! And that’s exactly the point!

#

That’s s a prime time to consider hiring someone to do admin, or scheduling, or perhaps take on less clients or less hours…GASP!!

#

Or perhaps you’d have to say no to volunteering for the PTA committee, your sons T-Ball team, or even saying no to a family dinner if your cup was already full for the day.

#

I get that there will always be scenarios where you have to do the right thing and put others above yourself, but I am a big believer that you can only do that effectively when you have prioritized your own needs first.

#

It’s only then that you will start living a life that is in true alignment with your values and priorities – and hopefully begin to feel that happiness and balance you are searching for 🙂
