WTF are FODMAPs?

Stesha Uncategorized

Here is a pic of one of my clients cutting out FODMAPs after experiencing a lot of digestive trouble.
The difference is 2 pounds in 2 days!
Here is a write up down by one of our awesome coaches @cassidy.dickson_ Comment below if you think you’re experiencing this!

Constant tummy troubles? I’ll let you in on something that changed my life and gave my angry gut a break.

Let’s be real here. If you have ever been to a doctor about your stomach issues you’ve likely been “diagnosed” with irritable bowel syndrome. Eat healthy, drink more water, and exercise more is what I was told to change. GTFO doctor, do you even know me?! The GI specialist I was seeing at the time offered me meds to basically numb the nerves in my stomach and sent me on my way. My next check-up I informed her I wasn’t comfortable taking meds to cover up the issue so she decided the next best thing was to offer me anti-depressants. I politely declined and I took matters into my own hands to get some answers and found the world of FODMAPs! Fun fact: it is estimated that 90 percent of the body’s serotonin is made in the digestive tract. Research states a serotonin imbalance may influence depression.

FODMAPs are a collection of short-chain carbohydrates (sugars) that aren’t absorbed properly in the gut.

The thing I want you to know about FODMAPs is you don’t have to eliminate EVERYTHING that is high FODMAP. You may be able to tolerate some completely, you might be able to play with how much of certain foods you can tolerate, or you may respond adversely pretty immediately to some. When you look at the list of FODMAPs you see REAL WHOLE FOODS and you think WTF, how are these hurting me!? What happens when you respond adversely is the food that is not absorbed in the small intestine pass into the large intestine where bacteria ferment them resulting in bloating, gas, diarrhea (if you’re a guy because girls don’t poop..especially diarrhea, and extreme discomfort.

I would never recommend low FODMAP as a diet alone because you likely do not have an adverse response to all of the high FODMAP foods. It’s not maintainable for the average person. It takes some time to weed out what works and what doesn’t, but it will change your life if you can dial those little details in.

I will also say that eliminating FODMAPs will only eliminate pain and discomfort some foods cause you.
